  • Place some dirt in sensory box – children use hands or various digging tools, and magnifying glass, to explore.
  • Add clay or plastic pots, bulbs, seeds, water, model insects and other animals
  • Use eyes, nose, and touch to find bits of leaves, rocks sand and decaying matter in the dirt.
  • Compare 2 kinds of dirt. Differences, similarities?
  • Make mud.
  • Stir some dirt with some water in a jar. Shake it and watch and see what happens. The dirt particles slowly fall to the bottom.

  • Make a “dirt” collage on a paper plate, with small rocks, leaf bits etc. Add simple stand-up trees, dinos, animals etc.
  • Crush or grind some different colored clays and mix with a little water to make “paint”. Use brushes and paint with it.
